Colleges to Recruit BOCES Students This Week

Nearly twenty institutions of higher learning will descend on the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School Albany and Schoharie campuses this week to recruit students.

The campuses will host their annual fall college fairs Wednesday in Albany and Thursday in Schoharie to provide an opportunity for students to get information about colleges and how to take the work skills they have learned at the career and technical school to the next level in college.

About 75 percent of career and tech school graduates locally go on to college to pursue further education. Some use college to advance the skills they learned a t BOCES while others use the skills learned at BOCES, like cosmetology or automotive maintenance, to pay for their college educations.

“I am going to college for art and game design next year. Going to Capital Region BOCES definitely gave me a head start and a basis to build on in college,” said Alan Duquette, a game design student from the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (RCS) school district.

Meanwhile, fellow senior Uniah Anos of Bethlehem has set her sight on an arresting future and will use her cosmetology skills to pay for it.

“I am going to college for criminal justice next year. Cosmetology will allow me to work in a salon while in college and give me something to fall back on,” she said.

Among the institutions scheduled to attend the fairs are:

• Advanced Welding Institute
• Alfred State
• Bryant & Stratton
• Culinary Institute
• SUNY Delhi
• Fulton-Montgomery Community College
• Herkimer Community College
