Coffee For a Cause at Capital Region BOCES Raises Money for Veterans

Coffee sales at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical Education Center – Albany Campus are helping to match veterans with service dogs.

With Veteran’s Day this month, students in the Retail & Office Services Program decided to support Operation at Ease by donating the proceeds of the coffee sales for the month in the campus store.

“I like to help people, and this is a good cause,” said DeNaezia Henderson, who attends the program from Guilderland High School.

Operation At Ease takes dogs from shelters, pairs them with deserving veterans and first responders and provides a free guided training program for post-traumatic stress and light mobility service dogs. Obedience skills and task training are held in small group classes of two to four teams to ensure optimal learning through one-on-one instruction at the organization’s Rotterdam facility.

Each month, students in the Retail & Office Services Program, who run the store, vote on a cause they want to support with the coffee sale proceeds.

Teacher Charles Bednarczyk said the students chose the charity for their monthly donation after learning about the organization and discussing veteran’s issues.

“The students felt strongly that they wanted to help our veterans,” Bednarczyk said.

The monthly effort typically raised about $100 for the charity of choice.
