Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library Sensory Room Ribbon Cutting

Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library cut the ribbon on their newly dedicated “Sensory Room”. This room allows for individuals of all ages to have a quiet, soothing space in the library available to them to be signed out for an hour at a time, and the space can be utilized as needed.

Librarian Barbara Reese had the idea for this room after seeing many children who could benefit from it come through the library, and made it happen, as only the 2nd library in NY to offer this amenity. This new space is intended for use by community members of all ages. The project was generously funded by the Friends of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library and a grant from the Southern Adirondack Library System.

Sensory rooms are specially designed environments that provide a calming and supportive space for individuals who experience sensory processing difficulties. These rooms have become increasingly popular in recent years as they offer a safe and soothing haven for those with neurodivergent conditions, such as autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders, helping them to manage sensory overload or anxiety.

Located on the ground floor near the library’s elevator, the sensory room is carefully outfitted with a range of sensory-stimulating and calming elements. The room features adjustable mood lighting that can be customized to create a tranquil atmosphere, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation. The back wall is equipped with tactile panels and equipment, providing a variety of textures and surfaces for users to touch and explore, which can help with sensory regulation and focus.

The room also includes cushioned chairs designed for comfort, allowing individuals to rest and unwind. Shelves are stocked with an array of sensory toys and instruments, such as fidget spinners, textured balls, and noise-canceling headphones, offering different sensory inputs to meet the diverse needs and preferences of its users. This thoughtfully arranged environment aims to create a serene and engaging space where individuals can feel safe, supported, and at ease.

Joining the celebration was Chamber’s Pete Bardunias, Rebecca Verhayden, Assistant Director, Alexandra Gutelius, Library Director, Senator Jim Tedisco, and Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh.
