Clarkson University Pledges to Support National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2018 as a Champion

Clarkson University is proud to announce that it has registered as a Champion of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2018. The University is joining a growing global effort among businesses, government agencies, colleges and universities, associations, nonprofit organizations and individuals to promote the awareness of online safety and privacy.

Held annually in October, NCSAM is a multi-layered and far-reaching campaign that was created as a collaborative effort between education, government, and industry to ensure all digital citizens have the resources needed to stay safer and more secure online while also protecting their personal information. As an official NCSAM Champion, Clarkson University is demonstrating its commitment to ensuring to cybersecurity, online safety, and privacy.

“With every facet of our lives being made steadily more accessible through technology, the need for protecting all of that data is increasing rapidly. We are all digital citizens who can improve our routines and practices to ensure not only our own cyber safety but that of the University community as a whole,” said Brian Huntley, Clarkson University Director of Network Services and Information Security. “National Cybersecurity Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to highlight the importance of this diligence to the campus community. However, protecting the University’s data and student data is an ongoing effort that includes risk analysis, policy, best practices for operations, end-user training and incident response. “

As part of Clarkson University’s NCSAM efforts, the University will be using digital signage and social media to promote awareness, encouraging the community to use technologies such as two factor authentication, practices such as strong and unique passwords and provide a refresher information security course to employees to help make sure they are up to date with the latest techniques for keeping our data and that of Clarkson’s students safe. Additionally, the career center is prepared to help students explore career opportunities in cybersecurity, a growing field that is projected to outpace other professions over four-to-one in the next eight years.
