June 25, 2020Centennial for Women’s Right to Vote Marked by Virtual Screenings
Two virtual screenings slated for June 24th and 30th ahead of on-air premiere of American Experience’s “The Vote” on July 6th and 7th
For Immediate Release – Monday, June 22, 2020 – TROY, NEW YORK >> WMHT Public Media (PBS-Public Broadcasting Service), is hosting two virtual preview screenings of clips from American Experience’s The Vote. These two digital events are taking place on Wednesday, June 24th and Tuesday, June 30th. Both of these screenings will occur at 6:30pm.
One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote, a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history.
WMHT’s free screenings will consist of two clips from American Experience’s documentary which premieres on-air Monday, July 6th for a two-night event that continues Tuesday, July 7th. The film will air both nights on WMHT-TV from 9pm-11pm. It will also be available to stream online for free. The Vote is currently available to watch online with WMHT Passport.
Each virtual screening will also include a moderated panel discussion with panelists from organizations including the League of Women Voters of New York State, the New York State Museum, and the Women’s Press Club of New York State.
Those interested in RSVPing for the June 24th virtual screening can visit here. And those interested in RSVPing for the June 30th virtual screening can visit here.
In July, WMHT’s statewide program New York NOW will air a three-part special report that will take a closer look at the role New York women played in winning suffrage, transforming the electorate and using the power of the vote to influence policy and strive for equality for all citizens. WMHT will also premiere new additions to its ‘She Inspires’ profiles of influential and trailblazing women.
The Vote delves deeply into the animating controversies that divided the nation in the early 20th century –– gender, race, state’s rights, and political power –– and offers an absorbing lesson in the delicate, often fractious dynamics of social change. Timed to the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote is narrated by Kate Burton and features the voices of Mae Whitman (Alice Paul), Audra McDonald (Ida B. Wells), Laura Linney (Carrie Chapman Catt) and Patricia Clarkson (Harriot Stanton Blatch) portraying some of the unsung warriors of the movement.
