Capital Region Chamber Board Member Publishes Essential Guide on College Financial Aid

The Capital Region Chamber is proud to announce that board member Dr. Dean Skarlis has recently co-authored a new book titled “Out of Pocket: What Parents and Counselors Need to Know About College Financial Aid.

The impetus for writing the book is that college costs continue to rise and yet families do not understand the financial aid/scholarship process.  Most are uneducated consumers.  Dr. Skarlis does a great deal of education and planning for his clients but wanted to share his knowledge with others.

“Most American families focus on retirement planning and do a good job of preparing, but very few understand the complexities of college planning, so I believe our book will help educate more people so they can make smart decisions” said Dr. Skarlis.

“Out of Pocket: What Parents and Counselors Need to Know About College Financial Aid”, will hopefully guide parents, students and counselors to better understand how colleges evaluate the ability to pay, and how to intelligently plan and pay for the huge expense that they will be facing.

Dr. Skarlis, who founded The College Advisor of New York, Inc. two decades ago, leads a dedicated team of 10 professionals. They assist families from the Capital Region and across the United States in navigating the complex college admissions, scholarship, and financial aid processes. Their mission is to help students find and gain admission to colleges that are a great fit socially, academically, and financially.

Dr. Skarlis has successfully guided thousands of students through the process with less stress, and more education about the SAT/ACT tests, the implications of Eary Decision, Early Action and helping them write essays and applications that stand out. He has been quoted in national publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
