Capital Region BOCES Students Donate Hundreds of Toys to the City Mission of Schenectady

They come from vastly different communities and have widely different career goals, but Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education Center (CTE) students are united in their mission this holiday season to help the less fortunate.

Students from every program ranging from Diesel Tech to Global Fashion to Cosmetology joined forces in recent weeks to ensure area youth will wake up with a present this holiday season.

A wooden sleigh located in the lobby of the Career and Technical Education Center – Albany Campus collected dozens of toys and games that were donated to the City Mission of Schenectady.

Additionally, $1,140 in monetary donations were raised from students, faculty and staff. Students in the Retail and Office Services program and the Vocational Training & Transition program, along with SkillsUSA volunteers, used those funds to purchase dozens of additional toys and games that were also donated to the City Mission.

Students said they enjoyed helping others.

On Dec. 11, several CTE students who are members of the SkillsUSA organization volunteered at the Schenectady City Mission’s toy store, assisting families in making their selection.

“It was nice to talk to a lot of people and help them find the right toys for their kids. It was good to help people, especially this time of year,” said Arianna Rivas, a Game Design and Implementation student from Mohonasen. Rivas is vice president of the SkillsUSA Albany Campus morning session chapter.

Kaleigh Canosa, morning session photographer, also enjoyed helping others.

“I used to volunteer with my church, but it’s been a couple of years, so it was fun getting to give back and help people. Everyone was really friendly,” said the Digital Media Design junior from Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk.
