Capital Region BOCES Adult Education Programs Boast Nearly 100 Percent Job Placement!

Take a class, get a job.

That’s the situation with those who enroll in the Capital Region BOCES Adult Sterile Processing Technician, which boasts a nearly 100 percent job placement for adults who complete the program.

“The program was good and I was offered a job even before I graduated from it,” said Samantha Bohl, a 2016 graduate of the program who now is an assistant manager at Albany Medical Center. “I was able to do my clinical hours at Albany Med and start my career while finishing up my education at BOCES.

2015 graduate Kishora Madani had a similar experience.  “BOCES gave me good training. After I completed the course, I took a test and Albany Med made me a sterile processing tech 1. … I couldn’t have done this without Capital Region BOCES,” he said.
Sterile processing technicians are on the front lines in the war against germs and are essential in keeping healthcare environments safe for patients. These technicians, who work in hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, medical laboratories, birth centers and other facilities where sterilized equipment is needed, decontaminate, inspect, package and sterilize equipment and devices used in the healthcare environment. These items can range from very complex medical devices to simple hand-held surgical instrumentation, and are essential to patient care and successful patient outcomes.

The job outlook for sterile processing technician careers is excellent. As the population grows and ages, the number of surgical procedures is expected to rise. According to United States Department of Labor, job opportunities for medical equipment preparers are expected to grow faster than average through 2024, with over 7,000 new jobs being added,” the institute states in research data posted online.

A new Sterile Processing Technician program will launch Sept. 21 for adults with classes meeting Mondays through Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. through April at the Career and Technical School Campus in Albany. Clinical work will take place at Albany Medical Center.
