January 4, 2023CanCode Communities Announces First Partnership with CUNY to Deliver Coding Education and Training
CanCode Communities, a nonprofit organization training non-traditional talent for software career opportunities, today announced its first partnership with The City University of New York (CUNY) to deliver classes in New York City. Registration is now underway for the Python for Data Analytics course to be provided jointly with Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn beginning January 24.
Launched in 2016, CanCode Communities has provided computer coding education and training to nearly 600 students across New York and western Massachusetts. That includes residents of the tri-state area participating in CanCode programs. However, this marks the first time the organization will deliver programs in partnership with an educational institution in the New York City region.
“We are thrilled to partner with CUNY to provide coding instruction and training to assist individuals seeking to build careers in the tech industry,” said CanCode Communities Founder and CEO Annmarie Lanesey. “This exciting expansion of CanCode’s unique program perfectly aligns with our mission of ensuring the tech jobs of today and tomorrow are accessible to everyone.”
“Increasing accessibility to tech education is crucial when there is a growing demand for tech talent,” said Dr. Simone Rodriguez, Vice President, Workforce Development, Continuing Education & Strategic Partnerships at CUNY. “It is essential for us to work towards closing the opportunity gap in New York’s tech economy and prepare workers for careers in this industry. These courses are perfect for people seeking to increase skills in their current positions or transitioning to a new career altogether.”
As part of this course, CanCode Communities will offer NDIA and Veterans’ scholarships to income-eligible students residing in New York City.
Registration is now underway for the entire Spring 2023 course schedule, which includes additional classes in partnership with Jamestown Community College, SUNY Schenectady Community College, SUNY Adirondack, and Capital Region BOCES. The 12-week courses, all provided virtually, feature instruction in a host of critical coding languages, including Front-End Web Development, JavaScript Fundamentals, SQL/ETL, and Python for Data Analytics.
The Spring 2023 course schedule is as follows:
Presented in partnership with Kingsborough Community College
Course info: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:45-8:45 p.m., January 24-April 20 — Virtual format
This introductory course will teach core programming concepts to prepare students for careers in data analytics using the programming language Python. One of the world’s most popular and in-demand programming languages, Python, is used to collect, analyze, and visualize data. At the end of the semester, students will have the opportunity to analyze and visualize data sets as part of a hands-on project to help build their portfolios.
Presented in partnership with Jamestown Community College and Capital Region BOCES
Course info: Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:45-8:45 p.m., February 13-May 15 — Virtual format
This course is structured around tutorials, assignments, and individual and group projects to give students hands-on practice building the pieces of code that determine how an online experience feels and connecting the user experience to the processes of the back end. Through lectures and individual assignments, students will establish solid foundations in essential tools of front-end developers: HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript, and collaborative workplace/version control tools Git and GitHub.

This course teaches the fundamentals of JavaScript, building a solid foundation before learning front-end web frameworks like React, Redux, Vue.js, and Angular. Students will begin with the basics of programming using JavaScript. They will learn how to solve algorithms with concepts such as callbacks, closures, high-order functions, and recursion. Following that, they will explore how to make applications come alive in the browser, how to communicate with a remote server, and finally, how to organize their code.

“SUNY Adirondack is excited to continue our partnership with CanCode to offer the Python for Data Analytics course,” said Susan Corlew, Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Innovation at SUNY Adirondack. “It is an incredible opportunity for individuals to advance their skills and gain employment in a high-demand field, and we are happy to be part of strengthening our region’s pool of trained tech professionals.”
“Capital Region BOCES is proud to partner with CanCode Communities as together we look to support building the workforce of the Capital Region,” said Joseph P. Dragone, Ph.D., Senior Executive Officer, Capital Region BOCES. “As the demand for a skilled workforce across all areas of IT continues to grow, our continued partnership will help fuel our region’s workforce pipeline.”
“We are pleased to support the long-standing partnership with our friends at CanCode Communities,” said Sarah Wilson Sparrow, MA Adult Learning, Vice President, Workforce Development & Community Education, SUNY Schenectady. “Together, our goal is to expand access to training and jobs in IT Software Development for those who are traditionally underrepresented in this industry. This partnership works to provide tuition support, barrier mitigation, and improved understanding of the IT sector as well as the variety of sustaining wage jobs therein.”
“The employment of software developers and systems software developers continues to grow in New York state and beyond,” said Grant Umberger, Director of Workforce Development, Jamestown Community College. “The ability to partner with CanCode, with funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), to offer free programming in digital literacy and other courses is an excellent platform for Jamestown Community College to address the shortage. We encourage individuals of any level to take advantage of this opportunity.”
