Community members, elected officials, and local leaders gathered at C.O.C.O.A. House for a mural unveiling ceremony honoring the late Walter Simpkins, coordinated by the Capital Region Chamber. The event celebrated Simpkins’ enduring impact on youth, families, and grassroots leadership across Schenectady.
Mark Eagan, President and CEO of the Capital Region Chamber, opened the program by reflecting on the warmth and unity within C.O.C.O.A. House—qualities that embodied Walter’s spirit. He highlighted Walter’s participation in the Chamber’s Entrepreneur Boot Camp as part of his effort to strengthen the structure and stability of Community Fathers.
Congressman Paul Tonko praised Walter as a “troubadour” for the community and highlighted his dedication to mentoring young people and strengthening family structures.
Senator Jim Tedisco commended the mural as a fitting tribute and presented citations recognizing Walter’s contributions to Hamilton Hill.
A representative for Assemblymember Angelo Santabarbara emphasized Walter’s tireless advocacy for securing resources for underserved neighborhoods.
County Legislator Omar McGill reflected on Walter’s role as a “bridge builder” who inspired emerging leaders, including his own journey in public service.
Schenectady City Councilman Carl Williams described Walter’s “quiet confidence” and his encouragement to others to use their voices boldly.
The mural, created by artist Eugene, was praised for its lifelike realism. Walter’s image, shown in his signature black hat, now serves as a vibrant, permanent tribute at C.O.C.O.A. House.
Additional attending representatives were Schenectady County Legislator Raj Ishmael, Richard Ruzzo and Kim Wiggins, Justin Chaires, Executive Committee Director & Policymaker, New York State Senate.
C.O.C.O.A. House (Children of Our Community Achieving), led by Will Rivas, continues to serve as a supportive cornerstone for children and families in Schenectady, carrying forward Walter Simpkins’ mission of community empowerment.
