March 12, 2020Business Leaders Provide Insight and Feedback to P-TECH Students
Representatives of two major regional businesses gave of their time and expertise on Tuesday, meeting with area sophomores and providing insight on successful techniques for taking part in job interviews.
Paul Riley of Golub Corp. and Carolyn Vinci of MVP Health Care spoke with sophomores in the innovative Capital Region BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) West Campus at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen during an hour-long morning session.
“They were engaged and interested in how to improve their futures,” said Riley.
“The student were engaging, very intuitive and asked good questions. They all had very different perspectives on the future and what they want to do,” Vinci added.
Tuesday’s gathering was the fourth in a series of monthly sessions for the sophomores and area business representatives.
The sessions are designed to allow experts in the industry to provide direct support and feedback to the high school students.
P-TECH is a cutting-edge, four- to six-year program (grades 9-12 and two years of college) prepares students for future careers in the field of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through hands-on, project based learning. Depending on their interests, students will study at one of two Capital Region sites beginning their freshman year and remain there for the duration of the program.
It also provides students with an opportunity to earn a FREE associates degree.
Offered to students throughout the region through a consortium that includes Capital Region BOCES, the Capital Region Chamber, Hudson Valley Community College and SUNY Schenectady County Community College, P-TECH offers a distinct pathway that leads to an associate’s degree from a neighboring college in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Cybersecurity.
There are currently thirty-nine freshmen and sophomores attending the P-TECH West Campus at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen and another 22 who attend the program’s East Campus located at Watervliet High School.
