Brown School Summer Camp Encourages Students to Focus Outward To Help Those In Need

Brown School, an independent school that serves children nursery through grade eight, is focused on teaching students the importance of focusing outward and serving those in need through a wide variety of community service projects. During the summer months the school runs a summer camp program that offers students a variety of camp experiences. As part of this, the camp focuses on community service through some unique fundraising activities.

This year senior campers are working on several initiatives. They recently hosted a bake sale and donated the proceeds to Pets for Patriots. The program pairs pets from local animal shelters with veterans. Head of School Patti Vitale said, “We educate our students about the important role veterans play in our community, country and world. We are proud our campers have raised money and awareness for ‘Pets for Patriots’. Two of the main causes our school community supports include veteran’s issues and animals. This is a perfect fit and the campers dedicated themselves fully.”

The campers also held a car wash as a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House. Earlier this year the school participated in a reading challenge that benefitted this organization. Brown School Educator and Camp Director Amanda Keil developed the summer community service program last year. “It is wonderful to see our campers give back to those in need. They develop creative ideas and work together as a team to make things happen. These are exciting real-life lessons for the students and I love watching them in action,” she said.

Vitale said, “Brown School has always been very committed to serving the community. I can’t even tell you how proud this makes me as I see first-hand the impact we are making in the lives of others.”

The school which prides itself on a strong academic curriculum and individualized attention for all students, also believes community service is an important focus point for life-long learning and growth.
