Students in the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education Center – Electrical Trades program got a first-hand look recently at the site work necessary for a major construction project.
Approximately 50 students toured on Feb. 14 the future Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education Extension enter across the street from Capital Region BOCES’ administrative offices on Watervliet-Shaker Road in Colonie.
Throughout the tour, students heard from BBL Construction Services representatives Jason Bruhn and Ted Abriel about the various processes being undertaken and the value of such work, as well as the need for more construction workers.
“It was a great opportunity for students to get access to an active, multimillion-dollar construction site and observe the progress,” said James Haas, Work-Based Learning Coordinator for BOCES.
Work on the new 46,377-square-foot CTE Extension Center began in September and is expected to be complete and ready to open in time for the 2025-2026 school year.
The center will allow the offering of two new programs—Plumbing Technology and New Visions: Emerging Technologies—and the expansion of several others—Heavy Equipment Repair and Operation, Electrical Trades, Building Trades, Cosmetology, Digital Media Design and Manufacturing and Machining Technology.
The tour was the one of a series over the coming months as students from a host of Career and Technical School construction-related programs tour the construction site.
