July 16, 2019Award-Winning Broadcast Journalist Dan Rather to Speak on Campus, Sept. 6
The University at Albany will welcome journalist and author Dan Rather to campus as the headliner of the fall semester’s Speaker Series on Friday, Sept 6.
The event is free and open to the UAlbany community and general public. It is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in SEFCU Arena. Tickets are required for entry and will be released later this summer at: ualbany.universitytickets.com/
During the event, Rather will discuss his new book, a collection of essays, titled What Unites Us: Reflections on Patriotism.

Dan Rather is a celebrated member of the American media. He is the former anchor and managing editor for the “CBS Evening News” and worked as a part of the CBS news team for 44 years until 2006. He was also well recognized as a correspondent for the investigative reporting show, “60 Minutes.”
A Texas native, Rather started his career as a reporter for the Associated Press. He got his first experience in broadcast journalism as a reporter for the local ABC affiliate in Houston and later took a job as news director for the city’s CBS affiliate.
As a national CBS news correspondent, Rather was stationed in Dallas and the first to report on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. His reporting during this national incident was a major factor in his promotion to White House correspondent for the network. He was on hand to cover the Watergate scandal in the early 70s. From 1981-2005, he served as the lead anchor on the “CBS Evening News.”
Rather has received numerous Peabody Awards for his work in the journalism field.

The Speaker Series
UAlbany’s Speaker Series has brought world leaders and thinkers to campus since its inception 10 years ago. It has featured nationally-recognized icons including President Bill Clinton (Spring 2011), Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson (Fall 2011), Bill Nye (Spring 2015), Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor (Spring 2017) and Aly Raisman (Fall 2018).
The series is sponsored by the UAlbany Student Association, Division of Student Affairs, University Auxiliary Services and the Alumni Association, in partnership with the New York State Writers Institute.
