November 1, 2017Albany Leadership Charter High School Joins The Global #GivingTuesday Movement
Albany Leadership Charter High School for Girls (Albany Leadership) has joined the #GivingTuesday movement with a goal of raising funds for college field trips and food for its free food pantry.
#GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Its goal is to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.
Supporting Students’ Pursuit of College Education
Albany Leadership strives to offer as many college experiences as possible for their students. Principal William Rivers commented, “with nearly 90% of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, it is burdensome for families to cover the cost of these trips, and we do not want students to miss critical college exposure opportunities simply due to their family’s economic challenges.” Last year, Albany Leadership had a 100% acceptance rate to colleges and they credit this, in part, to the college experiences they provide to their students. These experiences included college field trips, college prep classes (AP & college in the HS) as well as events around college prep and readiness.
This year, Albany Leadership hopes to bring 40 juniors to Philadelphia to visit Temple University, Cheyney University (the oldest of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America) and Lincoln University. In addition, their students will be visiting One Liberty Observation Deck, Eastern State Penitentiary, National Constitution Center and the area known as “America’s Most Historic Square Mile”.
Stocking The Food Pantry
In addition, Albany Leadership is working to collect 200 pounds of food for their food pantry.
Principal Rivers added, “It is difficult to be successful in every way of life if you are worried about where your next meal is coming from. Albany Leadership never wants the lack of food to affect our students outcomes and our goal is to ensure students and families do not worry about this.” Albany Leadership’s food pantry helps support their students and families when they are in need. With more than 89% of their students receiving free or reduced lunch, they want to support their families. This is even more crucial during school breaks, as students are not in school to receive free breakfast and lunch. The food pantry is utilized all throughout the year, with over 90 families utilizing it in the 2016-2017 school year. They currently partner with the Regional Food Bank and Capital Roots.
