A little more than a year after Michelin Green Guide inspector visited Albany, her impressions of the area are documented in the recently released Michelin Green Guide: New York. The French travel guide features a handful of Albany businesses, providing a good starting point for international tourists.
First established in 1900 by a French tire manufacturer to boost demand for cars, the Michelin Guide quickly became an indispensable European travel resource, whose 3-star system set the standard for businesses. In 2005, Michelin produced its first American guide, focusing on New York.
The itinerary mapped out in the Green Guide includes visits to the Albany Institute of History & Art, New York State Museum, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, and a cruise on the Hudson River aboard Dutch Apple Cruises. Restaurants included Angelo’s 677 Prime, New World Bistro Bar, Wellington’s, and Jack’s Oyster House. The Guide also lists accommodations for visitors: Renaissance Albany, and the Morgan State House Inn. The Green Guide includes positive reviews of these businesses, as well as City Beer Hall, the USS Slater, Corning Preserve, The Egg Performing Arts Center, Corning Observation Deck, New York State Education Department, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, Empire State Plaza, and Steuben Street Market. The Guide also mentions two events for the agenda, Tulip Festival and Festival of Nations.
The inspector declared that the New York State Museum was “worth a detour,” and praised Angelo’s 677 Prime, Wellington’s, New World Bistro Bar, and City Beer Hall. The visit to Albany was part of a larger tour of upstate New York, funded in part by I Love NY, and coordinated by the Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
