Afghanistan Refugee Finds His Future Through Capital Region BOCES

Janan Fateh Muhammad has a career goal and knew Capital Region BOCES was the means to achieving that goal.

The Latham resident graduated in August from the Adult High School Equivalency (HSE) program, after a little more than a year studying for the diploma, but also learning the English language.

“BOCES is the best place to launch for a new career, to learn English as a new language and to earn your high school diploma,” he recently said.

Muhammad immigrated to the United States from war-torn Afghanistan in 2018 and settled in the region.

He has a goal of becoming a heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration technician and knew that he first must earn a high school equivalency diploma and learn the language.

“My current job is driving for Grub Hub and Uber, but I know that I want to go to go to college and becoming a heating tech. It’s something I just want to do,” he said.

He praised the HSE program and teachers.

“The program was very important to me and they knew that. BOCES has very experienced teachers, especially my teacher Anna Stewart was the best teacher ever,” he said.

The programs are among many offered by Capital Region BOCES that draw approximately 1,000 adult learners annually. Many of the adult learners are pursue education in the post-secondary trade programs like heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), welding and nursing.
