A Place for Jazz announces the Fall Concert Series, featuring five evenings of world-class jazz in the Capital District. The series begins on September 7. All concerts begin at 7:30 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Schenectady, 1221 Wendell Avenue, Schenectady, NY. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and children under 12 are free if they’re with an adult. The 2018 A Place for Jazz Fall Season Schedule:
Sept. 7: Sharel Cassity Quintet – Saxophonist and composer Sharel Cassity graduated from the New School’s jazz program and attended the master’s program at Juilliard, where she received numerous honors, including ASCAP’s Young Composers Award in 2007. She has since achieved five consecutive appearances on Downbeat’s “Rising Star Alto Saxophone” list, released three albums, led three of her own bands and has been in demand by many well-known NYC bandleaders. She also appears on Michael Benedict’s CD tribute to Gary McFarland.
Sept. 21: Warren Wolf Quartet – Vibraphonist Warren Wolf graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2001. As a sideman, he has performed and/or recorded with such luminaries as Bobby Watson, Christian McBride, Wynton Marsalis, Christian Scott, Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spalding and others. He is a long-term member of the renowned San Francisco Jazz Collective. He played A Place for Jazz with guitarist Mike Mereno in 2010.
Oct. 5: Cliff Brucker’s Full Circle – Pianist/drummer/bandleader/educator Cliff Brucker formed this outstanding sextet in 2016. It includes legendary saxophonist Leo Russo, trumpeter Dylan Canterbury, guitarist Mike Novakowski, pianist Larry Ham and stellar bassist Otto Gardner. Their debut recording, “Full Circle Vol. 1,” in April 2016, led to performances in area venues including the Albany Jazz Festival and the Van Dyck Lounge. This led to their recent 2018 sophomore recording, “Vol. 2,” which has been given excellent radio play and complimentary reviews.
Oct. 19: Jazzmeia Horn – This highly acclaimed vocalist won the 2015 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. She has already earned a reputation in New York as a “Rising Star.”
After earning her degree at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, she began to appear in jazz festivals and clubs around the world. Her 2017 debut recording, “Social Call,” was positively received, including being nominated for a Grammy as best Jazz Vocal recording.
Nov. 2: Anat Cohen Quartet – Israeli clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won admiration for her expressive virtuosity and stage presence. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 1999 she became a featured performer for a decade touring with Sherrie Maricle’s all-woman big band, The Diva Jazz Orchestra. The Jazz Journalists Association has voted her as Clarinetist of the Year nine years in a row, and she has topped both the Critics and Readers Polls in the clarinet category in Downbeat magazine every year since 2011.
