9th Annual Lake George Polar Plunge Returns

Over 45 teams and nearly 400 people from all over the Capital Region are already signed up for the ninth annual Lake George Polar Plunge for Special Olympics New York!  Last year, over $65,000 was raised at this event and we are hoping to surpass last year’s total!

The plunge, one of nineteen happening around the state, will take place at noon, Saturday, Nov. 14, at Shepard Park Beach, no matter how cold the temperature is. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at Duffy’s Tavern, and there will be several events throughout the morning including a face painting, chair massages, bagels and pastries, coffee, cotton candy, an ice cream eating contest  and the characters from Frozen (Anna, Elsa, Olaf)

Plunge organizers are looking for more teams and individuals, especially from high schools and colleges.  Teams have already signed up from the RPI, Skidmore, St. Rose, Siena and UAlbany.   The plunge is an excellent community service opportunity for school groups, other youth groups, businesses and anyone else who wants to support Special Olympics. Representatives from Special Olympics will be happy to help individuals and groups take the plunge.

Notable groups that will be taking the Plunge include Momentive Performance Materials, Fort William Henry, CSEA, Capital Care Medical Group, The Smile Lodge, The Ninety Nine Restaurant, Seaway Diving, and MORE!

There are a number of incentives for the Lake George Plunge this year.  Every plunger who raises $100 will receive a Polar Plunge sweatshirt, and there are additional Polar Plunge incentives for those who raise more money.  Plungers who raise $300 by November6th will receive a free night’s stay at the Holiday Inn in Lake George the night before the Plunge and those who raise $500 or more will receive a complimentary wine tasting at The Adirondack Winery.

Special Olympics is the largest amateur sports organization in the world providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community — at no cost to the athlete, their families or caregivers.
