2019 Grad is Ready to Use Her New Skills to Pay for Her Future

Uniah Enos chose Capital Region BOCES not to learn a career, but to learn a skill that will pay for her to achieve her career aspirations.

Enos, a 2019 graduate from Bethlehem Central School District, studied cosmetology at Capital Region BOCES and will earn her state license this summer. She plans to use her styling and makeup skills to work in a salon and pay for college as she strives to become a lawyer.

“I am learning cosmetology to pay for college. I like working with hair and I thought it would be a fun way to pay for college,” Enos said.

“I want to become a lawyer eventually because I enjoy debating and helping people,” she added.

Enos was one of approximately 100 students enrolled in the cosmetology program on the Albany and Schoharie Capital Region BOCES campuses during the 2018-19 school year. They learn the skills necessary to pass the New York State licensing exam to become cosmetologists. They also learn skills ranging from massage to theatrical makeup to prepare them for a multitude of specialization options.

“Going to BOCES saved me money,” she said.

Asked in the days prior to graduation how confident she was about taking the state cosmetology licensing boards, Enos exuded confidence,

“I am ready for the boards. It’s not really that hard,” she said. “We have practiced, practiced and practiced some more here.”

Enos is far from the first student to learn cosmetology as a means of paying for college. Previous program graduates have gone on to college to study communications and social work and paid for it with their abilities to make people look beautiful.
