1st National Bank of Scotia’s Glenville Branch Celebrates 50 Years

glenville_old1When 1st National Bank of Scotia’s Glenville branch opened its doors five decades ago, gas was 32 cents per gallon, actor Ronald Reagan was elected governor of California on his way to becoming president, the first artificial heart implant took place in Houston, and “The Sound of Music” was the big award winner at the 1966 Academy Awards.

Fast forward half a century and the community bank, which is located at 240 Saratoga Road, is still going strong.

This week, to commemorate 50 years of banking in Glenville, the Scotia-based community bank plans to make a $500 contribution to Scotia-based Oak Hill School, a private therapeutic day school for students in grades K-8 whose emotional or behavioral challenges keep them from being successful in other schools. 1st National is also collecting items through Monday, Oct. 31 for Schenectady’s Things of My Very Own, a non-profit organization that provides crisis intervention services to children who have been impacted by extensive abuse and/or neglect.

“Any time you have a golden anniversary is a time to pause and reflect,” said John Buhrmaster, CEO, 1st National Bank of Scotia. “Although the way people bank has changed, the importance of community banks remains stronger than ever.

“We help to build better communities by lending to local residents, entrepreneurs and agricultural enterprises, which keeps America’s rural, suburban and urban communities growing and thriving,” added Buhrmaster, the immediate past chairman of the Independent Bankers of New York State. “This milestone provides an opportunity to celebrate the unique and critical role we play in our local hometown.”

As always, customers will remain front and center during the weeklong celebrations. Branch staff will give out promotional items, hold a raffle and serve refreshments. A small celebration with a cake cutting will take place Friday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. Customers, local politicians and members of the business community are invited to attend.

In addition to Glenville, 1st National Bank of Scotia has nine other branches. Locations include: Scotia (headquarters), Colonie, Clifton Park, Guilderland, Schenectady, Niskayuna, GE Global Research, Rotterdam and Saratoga.
