Food Pantries for the Capital District Honors volunteers of the Year and Sister Mary Coons Award Recipient

The Food Pantries for the Capital District hosted its 22nd Annual Community Auction on Saturday, May 7 at Christ Our Light Church in Loudonville.

Attended by more than 150 guests and volunteers, budding was underway by 11 a.m. Congressman Paul Tonko and Colonie Town Supervisor Paul Mahan presented proclamations to award winners Peggy and Leo Hetling and Ralph Della Rocca. Ralph Della Rocca was honored with a Sister Mary Coons Award, which recognizes someone who exemplifies the spirit of working together to feed the hungry, for his work with Christ Our Light Food Pantry in Loudonville where he has volunteered for over sixteen years. Ralph was nominated by Harry Nopper and George Elmer who describe him as “humble and dependable” and say he is “the backbone of the physical operation of the pantry.” Peggy and Leo Hetling were honored as Volunteers of the Year for their work with St. John’s/St. Ann’s Center in Albany where they have volunteered for over twenty years. Peggy and Leo were nominated by Barabara Quinn who describes Peggy as “friendly, organized, efficient, resourceful, and welcoming” and Leo as “organized, helpful, clever, loyal, and creative.”
