Over 20 Upper Union Street Businesses Feature Wedding Connections

The Upper Union Street BID (Business Improvement District) is hosting a “Wedding Walk About” on Saturday, October 24 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  The unique event pays homage to the fact that so many BID businesses relate to the wedding industry. Brides, grooms, members of wedding parties, wedding planners and others in the market for almost anything to do with a wedding are invited to the free event. Bridal jewelry, gowns, tuxedos, flowers, cakes, travel, gifts, favors, casual and formal wear for men and women, salon and barber services, catering, and even wedding apparel for pets will be showcased during the unique event. One of our very unique businesses involved shoes with rubber soles in a wide choice of colors to coordinate with the wedding theme at Michael’s Shoe Service.

Among the special features of the event will be a fashion show by Ferri Formals in featuring a “surprise” appearance by dogs in wedding attire from Head to Tail Pet Wellness Center at 2 p.m., refreshments and free gift cards with no expiration date for BOGO wedding bands at Sondra’s Fine Jewelry, an opportunity to sign up for ballroom dancing lessons at Dance Me Studio, an opportunity to book a DIY floral session to make wedding bouquets out of long lasting dried floral materials at Flowers By Jo-Anne, a chance for a personal consultation with the top destination wedding planers in the region, and an opportunity to book a groomsmen’s “Grooming Party” featuring hot towel shaves at Patrick’s Barber Shop.

“It’s amazing how many businesses dove tail with the wedding industry,” said Jo-Ann Mingo, one of the Wedding Walk About Coordinators and the owner of Flowers By Jo-Ann. “We even pulled in Union Aquarium, a supplier of beta fish often featured in wedding centerpieces.”

The concept of the Wedding Walk About was initiated when Madelyn Thorne, one of the BID’s co-executive directors, was in a conversation with the owners of a few of the newer businesses on Upper Union Street, Jo-Ann Mingo, Nicole and Shannon Cuff of Cuffs Cakes and Kathy Holtz of Dance Me Studio. “We were brain storming and the idea of putting on a wedding marketing event just popped up spontaneously.”

The event is free and open to the public. Visitors may pick up a “punch Card” at Flowers by Jo-Ann, 1613 Union Street and start visiting up and down Union Street. Cards initialed at 6 or more Walk About businesses will be eligible for a gift basket valued at over $500 worth of coupons for Upper Union Street businesses including a “Champagne Set Up” at neighboring Mohawk Golf Club and an Honora pearl pendant donated by Sondra’s Fine Jewelry and valued at $100.
