The 50th Anniversary of Grateful Dead Celebrated for an Entire Week on Exit 97.7 WEXT

No other band holds the mythical place in our collective conscious like the Grateful Dead.  It’s been said that they were the most important band of the psychedelic era and broke new ground as one the most innovative live acts in music history. They broke all the rules over a career that has spanned five decades and influenced not only two generations of musical artists and fans, but popular culture itself.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Grateful Dead. Exit 97.7 WEXT will celebrate this landmark event from Friday, October 23 – Friday, October 30 with an entire week devoted to the music of the Grateful Dead. WEXT has an ongoing commitment to the music of the Grateful Dead:

  • The “Dawn of the Dead” features Grateful Dead songs every weekday morning
  • “The Grateful Dead Hour” features live and rare performances every week
  • WEXT plays The Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Band, Ratdog and other members of the Dead family
  • WEXT doesn’t play just a few Dead songs, but much of the catalogue including live performances
  • Earlier this year, WEXT commemorated the 20th anniversary of Jerry Garcia’s passing with an entire day of music

It will be a week filled with an inspiring array of Grateful Dead music – Uncle John’s Band, Touch of Grey, Dark Star – all interspersed with the eclectic roots and rock music that WEXT features every day. We’ll share iconic Grateful Dead songs from the studio and the stage as we remember the Dead’s amazing spirit and contribution to rock music.

“When I heard Grateful Dead music, I knew that it was the most powerful force on the planet.”

– Mickey Hart

WEXT plays the roots of rock and roll, the innovators, those who created the sound. Perhaps no band is more important to planting the roots of rock, folk and blues than the Grateful Dead. The weeklong celebration of their 50th anniversary coincides with The Dead & Company performing live at The Times Union Center on Thursday, October 29. The week will culminate on Friday, October 30 with a countdown of the 100 best Grateful Dead songs in history.
