The Little Gallery at Sage to Host Opening Reception of Kyle Avery Exhibition

Avery_Image1The Little Gallery on the Sage College of Albany campus is pleased to host an opening reception for Slam Dunk: Recent Works, an exhibition of recent collage work by alum Kyle Avery on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Avery, who is currently completing his Master of Fine Arts degree at SUNY Albany, has been exploring digital and analog media in two-dimensional space. The recent works are a combination of drawings, found photographs, and refuse. Avery uses a mixture of textures, colors, and found materials and is influenced by wide-ranging interests that include 1970s van culture, patterning, 19th century Indian miniature painting, and cartoon culture. He investigates paper as refuse and as a means of archiving, appropriating, and communicating a narrative through visual motifs.

“Slam Dunk is a collection of works made from the process of gathering hundreds of images over the course of a year,” explained Kyle Avery. “My intent was to stick with the images I found, to work only within the guidelines of the source imagery, and to create my own codex of visual meaning. It became a mass index of motifs; some of which tell stories and some which become reoccurring characters throughout the work.”

The Little Gallery is sponsored by the Department of Art + Design and shows the work of faculty, students, and alumni artists. It is located in Rathbone Hall on the Sage College of Albany campus located at 140 New Scotland Ave. Gallery hours are 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Sunday – Friday; closed on Saturdays.

The opening reception, on October 2nd from 6- 9 p.m., is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through October 30.
