Shenendehowa Marks Historic Milestone with New Early Learning Center

The Shenendehowa Central School District recently celebrated the grand opening of the Atria Early Learning Center, marking a historic milestone as the district launches universal full-day kindergarten for the first time. The new facility at 5 Maxwell Drive will welcome more than 630 kindergarten students this fall in a learning environment designed specifically for early childhood education. 

The opening represents the culmination of years of planning and community collaboration, made possible through the generous donation of the building and property by Donald C. Green and his family. District leaders transformed the former commercial space into a state-of-the-art center featuring early childhood classrooms, play-based learning spaces, specialized support services, and wraparound care through a partnership with the Capital District YMCA. 

During the celebration, Dr. Cecily Wilson Turner, Superintendent of Schools, described the project as a transformational investment in the district’s youngest learners, providing a strong foundation for academic, social, and emotional growth. Enrollment in kindergarten has increased by more than 175 students compared to last year, reflecting strong community enthusiasm for the new program. 

New York State Senator Jim Tedisco and Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh praised the district’s commitment to early education, emphasizing the importance of giving children a strong start and expanding access to full-day kindergarten opportunities. 

The event also recognized the contributions of district leadership, educators, staff, community partners, and the Board of Education. Naomi Hoffman, Board President, noted that Atria represents more than a new building. It is an investment in students, families, and the future of the Shenendehowa community. 

As students prepare to enter its classrooms for the first time, the Atria Early Learning Center stands as a lasting example of what can be achieved through vision, generosity, and a shared commitment to educational excellence.
