A Celebration of Creativity and Community: Living Resources Opens Artfully Unique

The Capital Region celebrated creativity, connection, and opportunity as Living Resources officially opened its newest social enterprise, Artfully Unique, a collaborative art gallery/gift shop located at 2005 Western Avenue in Albany. The ribbon cutting, emceed by Shawn Daley of the Capital Region Chamber, brought together supporters, artists, state leaders, and longtime partners to mark the expansion of a program that has supported artists with disabilities since 1986.

From the moment guests stepped inside, the gallery radiated energy. Bright canvases lined the walls, each reflecting the distinct voice and vision of its creator. Artfully Unique is more than a gallery, it is a professional, inclusive space where artists are recognized for their talent and compensated for their work.

Artfully Unique was created as a community-centered gallery/gift shop that doubles as an employment training site. The space provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to develop artistic, retail, and professional skills while earning income from their work. Every purchase directly supports the artist, reinforcing Living Resources’ commitment to economic empowerment and creative expression.

Senator Pat Fahy, Chair of the Senate Disabilities Committee, attended the event and spoke about the unifying and restorative power of the arts. “Art is what soothes our souls,” she shared, reflecting on the emotional impact creative spaces can have on communities. She also noted the extraordinary talent represented in the gallery and expressed her appreciation for Living Resources’ longstanding work in the region.

Elizabeth Martin, CEO of Living Resources, described the gallery as a “gateway” for both artists and for the broader community. “Art is a universal language,” she said, noting that many individuals use creative expression to communicate thoughts, feelings, and experiences. She emphasized the gallery’s role in preparing individuals for meaningful employment while creating a welcoming space for all.

Michael Anderton, Assistant Director of the Arts Program, highlighted the professionalism behind the gallery’s design and curation. He reaffirmed that Living Resources views each artwork as valuable, and that artists receive payment for every piece sold, an essential part of Living Resources’ mission to promote dignity and independence.

The gallery is supported by curator Molly, gallery manager Jasmine, and staff members Emma and Marissa. Artfully Unique was launched with support from a seed grant awarded by the Advance Albany County Alliance. In addition to original artwork, the gallery features cards, coasters, prints, and other accessible items, each created with care and intention.

The opening of Artfully Unique Gallery marks an exciting chapter for Living Resources and the Capital Region arts community. The space stands as a model of inclusion and opportunity — where artists are valued, creativity is celebrated, and community connections flourish.

All 2026 ribbon cuttings of the Capital Region Chamber and its affiliates are sponsored by Community Bank, N.A.
