New Laser System Elevates Rockin’ the Dome Immersive Shows at miSci Planeta

Discover Schenectady announced today that the Museum of Innovation and Science (miSci) in Schenectady has installed a state-of-the-art Laser Fantasy system in its planetarium, bringing a powerful new visual dimension to its popular Rockin’ the Dome series. A special 21+ Laser Launch Party will take place Saturday, December 6, featuring laser demonstrations and back-to-back classic rock shows featuring the music of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Building on the successes of James Hood’s Mesmerica, and the still ongoing Beautifica, which captivated audiences during extended runs at miSci, Rockin’ the Dome continues the evolution of immersive audiovisual programming at miSci. The newly installed Laser Fantasy system adds yet another level of excitement, surrounding guests with full-color graphics lasers, atmospheric fog effects, and synchronized imagery designed to heighten the connection between music and visuals*.

“Thanks to strong community support, our planetarium now features some of the most advanced immersive technology in the Northeast,” said miSci’s President Chris Hunter. “These new laser enhancements open the door to brand-new artistic and musical experiences. Whether you love The Beatles, The Stones, Queen, or Prince, these new shows are going to feel larger than life.”

Laser Fantasy, founded in 1977, has been a leader in producing laser-based entertainment for planetariums nationwide. miSci’s new installation features two full-spectrum graphics lasers capable of projecting vivid animations, designs and abstract patterns above the audience — transforming the dome into a dynamic, music-driven canvas.

“Schenectady County continues to be a place where innovative arts and cultural experiences thrive, and miSci’s new laser system is a perfect example of that momentum,” said Gary Hughes, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature. “This upgrade takes Rockin’ the Dome to an entirely new level, offering audiences immersive shows they won’t find anywhere else in the region. It’s exciting to see miSci pushing the boundaries of what a planetarium experience can be.”

The Rockin’ the Dome Laser Launch Party will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 6. The event includes a cash bar, the Electro Taco food truck, laser demonstrations, and two classic rock laser shows:

  • 5:50 p.m. — The Beatles
  • 6:50 p.m. — The Rolling Stones

Tickets are $20 per person and $18 for miSci members and available here. https://misci.org/smallpage/rockin-the-dome

Rockin’ the Dome is made possible through the support of presenting sponsor Market 32/Price Chopper. The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority provided over $140,000 in funding to equip the planetarium for immersive programming including Mesmerica, Beautifica and the expanding Rockin’ the Dome lineup. Additional support was provided by the Bender Scientific Fund and the Niskayuna Community Foundation.

In addition to the newly installed Laser Fantasy system, miSci’s planetarium has undergone significant technical upgrades including a new projector, projection equipment, sound system, seating, and other technical enhancements.

“miSci continues to redefine what a planetarium experience can be,” said Todd Garofano, Executive Director of Discover Schenectady. “The new Laser Fantasy system brings an entirely new sense of energy and immersion to Rockin’ the Dome. It’s innovative, visually stunning, and one more reason why Schenectady County is becoming a top destination for one-of-a-kind experiences.”
