Capital Region BOCES Offers Foundation for Technological Future for High School Students

Whether their interests lie in coding, cybersecurity or network cabling, high school students attending Capital Region BOCES receive a solid foundation for a high-tech future.

The Network Technology and Game Design & Implementation programs offered at the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education Center provide students with a base of technology awareness to launch solid careers.

“I want to work in fiber optics as soon as I get out of college. Going to [Capital Region BOCES] is giving me a head start on that,” said Yousif Alsammarraie, a Network Technology senior from Bethlehem.

Located on the Albany Career & Technical Education Center campus, the two-year Network Technology program helps area students develop a unique understanding of today’s ever-growing field of network connectivity and emerging technologies. Through lectures, course work and hands-on activities, students explore this exciting field and gain the technical knowledge and professionalism needed to prepare them for an after-high school career or post-secondary study.

Meanwhile, students in the Game Design and Implementation program learn the “ins” and “outs” of video game design, 3-D modeling and computer programming. They also learn in the Albany Campus program the history of games and create a wide variety of games, including board games, card games and dice games while exploring various art concepts during the first year and 3-D modeling during the second year of the program.

“I have always been into coding, so I enrolled in the [Game Design and Implementation] program to get more experience and be able to do this as a side job,” said Arianna Rivas, a Mohonasen senior.

Rivas is planning a career in criminology and may use the technological skills learned at BOCES to solve cyber crimes.

Meanwhile, fellow Game Design senior Laila Daniels is planning for a career in coding.

“I like the people in the [Game Design] program and how we work together as a team. Coming here allows me to work towards my future goals by improving my coding and tech skills,” she said.

Enrollment is currently underway for the 2025-26 school year. For more information on career and technical school programs, go to https://www.capitalregionboces.org/career-technical-education/courses-programs/.
