November 7, 2024Fall into Fun: 518 ElevatED Hosts Inaugural Fall-La-Palooza at Washington Park’s Lake House
Get ready for a day of fun, food, and community spirit as 518 ElevatED kicks off its inaugural Fall-La-Palooza celebration.
This family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, November 16, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM (rain or shine) at the scenic Washington Park Lake House in Albany. The celebration will feature live music by DJ Hollywood, delicious catering by Allie B’s Cozy Kitchen, and a tempting hot cocoa bar. Attendees can look forward to an uplifting experience that celebrates the strength, spirit, and resilience of our community.
Fall-La-Palooza promises to be more than just a celebration; it’s an opportunity to reconnect with 518 ElevatED’s new leadership, build meaningful relationships, and learn more about the organization’s innovative programs and exciting vision for the future. Whether you’re an alum or a first-time participant, this event is your chance to get inspired and be part of something bigger.
Now in its 28th year, 518 ElevatED (formerly Capital Region Sponsor-a-Scholar) has been elevating lives across Troy, Albany, and Schenectady by providing access to education, mentorship, and resources that might otherwise be out of reach.
“Our mission is to offer barrier-free programming that empowers youth through mentorship and pre-college and pre-career exploration,” said Peter Gabak, 518 ElevatED’s Executive Director. “While 62% of U.S. high school seniors pursue higher education and 38% enter the workforce, we strive to ensure every student in our region can envision a bright, thriving future for themselves.”
The event will also provide an opportunity for those interested in becoming mentors to connect with local students and meet mentor representatives. “We are always looking for community-based mentors to support high school students in Albany, Troy, and Schenectady,” said Gabak. “Currently, we have 100 mentors paired with 119 active student scholars studying at 97 colleges across 17 states. These mentor-mentee relationships are uniquely tailored to offer personalized support and guidance.”
“I’m seeing potential and possibility,” said Nicholas Cassius Clay, a 518 ElevatED mentor, reflecting on his experiences with his mentee. “So much—if not everything—is about exposure. It’s about seeing things differently. If you’re not exposed to certain opportunities or ideas, you don’t even know they’re possible.”
Community members can register for the event via the organization’s website or at the door. All proceeds support 518 ElevatED’s mission to uplift youth through education, engagement, and empowerment. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy live entertainment, games, and a chance to join 518 ElevatED’s mission to empower and uplift youth.
