November 5, 2024Albany NanoTech Selected as America’s First National Semiconductor Technology Center
In a transformative move for New York’s Capital Region and the U.S. semiconductor industry, Albany NanoTech has been named the nation’s first National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC). The announcement, made by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on October 31, marks a major milestone in the race to strengthen America’s semiconductor capabilities, addressing critical needs in research, development, and workforce expansion.
A Strategic Win for the Region
Albany NanoTech, located at the Albany NanoTech Complex, will spearhead the effort to maintain and advance U.S. leadership in semiconductor technology. Its selection reflects years of dedication and advocacy from local and national leaders, as well as a commitment from New York’s academic, industrial, and workforce resources to establish a globally competitive semiconductor hub. With this recognition, Albany will play a pivotal role in semiconductor research, positioning the Capital Region as a central player in the nation’s technological future.
“CEG has been actively engaged in semiconductors for more than two decades. This announcement builds on our region’s success and positions us well for further investment. Our region’s fully enabled ecosystem has skilled talent, workforce development programs, research universities, private sector R&D, and the supply chain, along with the infrastructure necessary for companies to locate and grow here. Our region stands ready to host the NSTC facility, support its training needs, help new companies invest, and facilitate expansion projects,” said Center for Economic Growth and Capital Region Chamber President & CEO Mark Eagan; his full statement can be read here.
Why This Matters for New York and Beyond
The Department of Commerce and Natcast, the operator of the NSTC, will initially invest up to $825 million to further build out equipment at Albany NanoTech, to conduct cutting-edge extreme ultraviolet (EUV) research and development, and to establish an NSTC presence with offices and support services in Albany.
The NSTC’s role in developing semiconductor technology is significant: as the demand for microchips rises across all sectors, Albany NanoTech will help reduce reliance on foreign manufacturing and secure a steady domestic supply. The designation brings substantial economic and workforce development opportunities, promising thousands of jobs, new infrastructure investments, and partnerships with local educational institutions. The U.S. Department of Commerce and Natcast intend for the NSTC EUV Center at Albany NanoTech to be operational by 2025.
Federal Investment and Bipartisan Support
This achievement aligns with federal goals set forth in the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which outlines initiatives to bolster national security, enhance innovation, and sustain competitiveness in technology. Senator Schumer, who has championed this vision from its inception, underscored the decision’s importance, saying, “This is it—Albany’s selection as America’s first National Semiconductor Technology Center will place our region at the forefront of semiconductor R&D and innovation.”
A Bright Future for New York’s Technology Sector
For the Capital Region, Albany NanoTech’s selection heralds a new chapter of growth and prestige, promising far-reaching impacts that will be felt by businesses, educational institutions, and communities across the state. As the NSTC, Albany NanoTech is poised to be a linchpin in America’s technological progress, setting a strong foundation for future breakthroughs.
This move not only elevates the region’s status on a national and global stage, but also ensures that New York remains central to the future of semiconductor research and development.
