When a group of local businessmen decided that the time had come for the Village of Scotia to open its own bank 100 years ago, Calvin Coolidge was America’s president, women had recently gained the right to vote, and the nation’s first electric automatic traffic signal had just been invented.
Fast forward a century and 1st National Bank of Scotia, which is still headquartered at 201 Mohawk Avenue, continues to provide creative financial solutions — and superior personalized service — to families and businesses throughout Albany, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties.
On Friday, Nov. 17, 100 years following its founding, the Scotia-based community bank held a centennial celebration attended by bank leadership, staff, officials from the Town of Glenville and Village of Scotia, and local politicians.
The event’s highlight was a ribbon cutting for the bank’s spacious main office, which has been renovated, and many of the key features from the 1923 branch restored. Updates include relocating the teller line back to its original location near the vault, and restoring the arched windows, crown molding, outside alarm, and lobby clock. The original Glenville Bank entrance — and eye-catching historical spinning sign — are also being brought back.
“Commemorating 100 years is a significant milestone and a chance to celebrate the vital role community banks play in supporting their hometown communities,” said John Buhrmaster, CEO, 1st National Bank of Scotia. “Throughout the past century we have remained committed to providing personal service and having people who understand the needs of local families and businesses make nimble lending decisions.
“Our banking approach is rooted in traditional values, but we also provide customers access to cutting-edge financial products and services,” added Buhrmaster, former chairman of The Independent Community Bankers of America. “We look forward to continuing to foster strong relationships and contributing to the communities we serve.”
With the holiday season just around the season and Americans struggling financially, 1st National plans to give back to the underserved as part of its ongoing 100th anniversary celebration. Gift cards totaling $10,000 have been given to the Scotia-Glenville School District and Scotia Glenville Food Pantry to distribute to families in need.
“Our hope is that these funds will give those struggling with financial burdens a more enjoyable, festive holiday season with their families,” said Buhrmaster.
The bank plans to continue celebrating its anniversary all year long with its employees, customers, and board members.
