Cutting to the Financials of Cosmetology During Summer Learning

Megan Maloney of Broadview Federal Credit Union talks finances with students in the Capital Region BOCES Cosmetology program on July 7.

Maloney, a financial wellness educator, spoke about how the aspiring cosmetologists, skin care technicians and salon owners can maximize their financial gain from their future business plans.

“She told us everything from how to create separate bank accounts for various expenses to how to save money by not buying coffee every day,” said student Madison Szczepkowski.

Szczepkowski, a 2023 graduate of Colonie Central High School, and approximately 20 other students are attending the summer program to gain the 1,000 hours required to take the New York State Cosmetology Licensure Exam.

The students are all recent graduates of BOCES and their respective high schools.

A key component of all Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education programs is the active participation of business partners to provide real world context and the latest in technological and skill innovation  For many of the programs, including cosmetology, this includes financial planning and advice from experts in the field.

Students routinely meet during the school year with financial planners, credit union and bank officials who advise them on how to save money, plan for retirement and even start a business.
