Exhibit About the Life of Grant at Brookside Museum

To celebrate the Bicentennial of Ulysses S. Grant’s Birthday, the Presidential Library at Mississippi State University has created a traveling exhibit about Grant’s life.  Banners describe his life from his humble beginnings until his accession to the United States presidency.  The exhibition will be presented at the Brookside Museum at the Saratoga County History Center as part of a special agreement between Friends of Grant Cottage.  The exhibition runs from October 6 to November 11 during regular business hours (Thursday to Sunday from 1 to 5 pm).

As part of the celebration of the 18th president’s bicentennial year, the exhibit of eight panels, three feet wide and eight feet tall, was designed. The presentation describes the humble beginnings of Grant in Ohio until his accession to the presidency.  His biography is told through text and historical images, and the exhibit includes replicas of objects from the Grant Library.  The National Endowment for the Humanities is financially supporting the project through the Mississippi Humanities Council.

“This exhibit is part of our year-long celebration of US Grant’s bicentennial year at Grant Cottage Historic Site. We are pleased with being able to expand the reach of our efforts to the Saratoga County History Center,” explains Ben Kemp of the Friends of Grant’s Cottage.  “One of the highlights of the year is our upcoming Grant Bicentennial Gala fundraising event on October 16th in support of The Friends of the Ulysses S. Grant Cottage and the building of an Education Pavilion on Mt. McGregor, part of the ambitious strategic development plan for the site.”  Information is available at https://www.grantcottage.org/2022gala.

“It was in Saratoga County that President Grant and his family spent six weeks before he died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885,” said Anne Clothier, Education Director of the Saratoga County History Center. “With this exhibit, the History Center remains committed to sharing the diverse stories of Saratoga County.  We are also very proud of our long-term partnership with the Friends of Grant’s Cottage.”
