Hudgson Russ Law Firm Staff Volunteers to Help with Seasonal Upkeep on USS Slater in Albany

Hodgson Russ, a business-focused law practice with local offices in Albany and Saratoga, sent more than a dozen attorneys, legal assistants, and paralegals to volunteer to help with seasonal maintenance and upkeep on the USS SLATER Destroyer Escort Historical Museum. Moored on the Hudson River in downtown Albany, the historic World War II naval destroyer escort has undergone an extensive restoration that has returned the ship to her former glory.

The Hodgson Russ volunteers spent the afternoon painting different areas of the ship. Open seasonally from April to November, the museum was closed for the majority of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, but has been able to remain open for visitors this year.

“Albany is fortunate to have such a special piece of American history permanently situated here on the Hudson River,” said Christian Soller, managing partner of Hodgson Russ’ Albany and Saratoga offices. “We are grateful to be able to help our friends, support the museum and spend time giving back to the community.”

“USS SLATER is so lucky to have the support of the Hodgson Russ law firm and organizations like it,” said Shanna Schuster, Visitor Engagement & Program Manager USS SLATER/Destroyer Escort Historical Museum. “The extra hands for maintenance projects are vital to keeping SLATER in “ship shape” for the thousands of visitors that cross her brow each year.”

Excluding the SLATER, there are currently six destroyer escorts believed to exist around the world. Three of these ships are preserved as museums, the rest are still in some form of service in foreign fleets. Of the following ships, only the SLATER is preserved and maintained in its World War II configuration. The museum offers guided tours, youth group overnight camping, and a historic location to hold naval reunions. Its website, www.ussslater.org, offers online tours and guided virtual tours of the ship.
