August 2, 2021Capital Repertory Theatre Restarts its Subscription Campaign for its New Albany Home
Capital Repertory Theatre’s long hiatus is coming to a close with the recently announced production this summer of “Ethel Waters: His Eye is on the Sparrow” and today’s announcement of the shows on theREP’s upcoming season at its new home.
The inaugural season at 251 N. Pearl St. consists of four titles on the 2020-21 announced season that was postponed due to the pandemic: the plays “The True” and “Fly” and the musicals “Jersey Boys” and “Wizard of Oz”. In addition, the subscription plan includes a play at Proctors, “To Kill a Mockingbird” starring Richard Thomas. Both theREP and Proctors are part of Proctors Collaborative.
“We are excited to finally present our first season in our forever home,” said Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill, theREP’s producing artistic director. “And I am pleased to say the season we had announced for 2020-21 is largely intact for this restart, with the addition of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ which has received rave reviews on Broadway and on the road.
“While we had many people subscribe in the short window between our season announcement in February 2020 and the start of the pandemic – and those seats have been reserved – we want to encourage as many people as possible who haven’t subscribed to consider us. If you have ever experienced theREP we have the same spirit and dedication to professional theatre, but the ambiance at 251 N. Pearl will be much improved. Everything from auditorium sight lines to acoustics to bathroom capacity are upgraded from our previous facility.”
theREP announced its purchase of a former commercial bakery in 2017 and its intention to relocate from a rented facility at 111 N. Pearl St. A $14 million renovation project ensued with a goal of opening during the summer of 2020. Construction delays due to the pandemic resulted in contractors finishing work in early 2021. The project includes a 309-seat MainStage, a 70-seat black box theatre, an open lobby with concessions, and expanded support space including dressing rooms, prop and costume shops, administrative offices and a VIP lounge.

In addition to “Ethel Waters: His Eye is on the Sparrow”, there is one additional previously announced show at theREP that is being presented later this year for 2019-20 subscribers and the general public: “The Irish and How They Got That Way” is being presented Nov. 19-Dec. 19. Tickets for this show are also currently on sale.
