Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County Breaks Ground on First Vet Build Home in Schenectady County

On Wednesday, November 11th, Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County broke ground on two brand new, two story homes at 1688 and 1702 Carrie Street. These are the 55th and 56th new homes built by Schenectady Habitat and the 5th and 6th on Carrie Street. One house, 1688 Carrie Street, is the first Vet Build, funded by the brothers and sisters of IUE-CWA, TrustCo Bank and others and constructed through the efforts of volunteers—community joining hands with community. Upon completion, this home will be sold to a qualified, first-time home buyer veteran who has served our country.

Rev. Bill Levering, President of the Board of Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County stated: “Schenectady Habitat is grateful to all the members of IUE-CWA for their continued support of our mission of building safe, affordable homes for working class families. In this case, the family of a veteran. Vet Build is an important and exciting program and we’re grateful to all who are making this possible, particularly the Cuevas family.

Christian Cuevas, Home Buyer of Vet Build has said: “We will finally have a home. A dream come true.”

Through the support of the City of Schenectady, Capital Region Land Bank and Schenectady Habitat’s donors, an identical home will be constructed for another qualified, first-time home buyer at the lot next door –  1706 Carrie Street.

These building lots were purchased by Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County after the Capital Region Land Bank and City of Schenectady demolished (3) long abandoned, derelict two-family houses.
