May 15, 2020Carey Institute for Global Good Donates to Hilltowns Community Resource Center Food
The Carey Institute for Global Good has donated $3,000 to the Hilltowns Community Resource Center in Westerlo, NY. The Carey Institute staff and trustees donated $1,500, and the Institute has matched with a $1,000 donation. Another generous donor came forward to match an additional $500.
Normally, the HCRC food bank serves about 92 families every month, but in March they served 182 families as a result of the recent impact of the Coronavirus on the economy. “People were not prepared for the crisis and even some of our donors throughout the year have become clients.” said Mary Beth Peterson, the director of the HCRC. Dan Secor, Executive Chef at the Carriage House Restaurant at the Institute, reached out to one of his suppliers, who offered to fill a food order with the $3,000 donation for the food pantry at a $250 discount, which the Institute used for an additional $250 in food purchases. Secor delivered the food to HCRC on Monday. “It is very humbling to work for an organization that continues to contribute during these difficult times,” said Secor. “The fact that I was able to assist in any way is a great honor for me, a moment I can look back on and be proud of. At the very least I hope this can inspire anyone with the means to help their communities. After all we are all in this together!”
“Our budgets have not increased so we are really struggling to keep food on the shelves,” said Peterson. “We are so grateful for [this] support.” With this donation, the Institute hopes to help the HCRC serve as many families as possible for the next several months.
While this donation is significant, demand for the food bank services continues to grow.
