Nearly Two Dozen Capital Region BOCES Automotive Students Earn Professional Certifications

Twenty-three high school students from schools across the Capital Region recently bolstered their resumes by earning professional certifications while learning remotely from school.

The students in the Capital Region BOCES automotive programs hail from 11 school districts ranging from Duanesburg and Voorheesville to Schenectady, Niskayuna and Guilderland.

The students all completed Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) Lifting it Right Certification, which shows employers that the students know the proper way to lift a vehicle without causing injury or property damage. It provides guidance on spotting and lifting a vehicle, as well as preparing the service bay, maintaining load stability, lowering the lift and lift maintenance, said teacher Brian LaCroix. The students are  juniors and or seniors in Lacroix’s and Scott Tessier’s Automotive Trades Technology and Automotive Youth Educational System (AYES) programs.

Automotive students – along with the more than 1,000 other Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School students – have been learning remotely since in mid-March when the COVID19 pandemic forced schools to close across the United States.

For many career and tech students, online learning has provided them with an opportunity to acquire industry certifications that improves their value with prospective employers. For example, Diesel Tech students recently completed the same ALI certifications as these automotive students, while more than 60 cosmetology students recently completed disinfecting certifications through various companies.
