Business Executives Offer Virtual Advice to P-TECH Students

A pair of executives with large business operations in the Capital Region spent part of their day on Tuesday providing insight and information to freshmen and sophomore students in the Capital Region BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) program West Campus at Mohonasen.

Ben Bishop of Price Chopper/Market 32 and Alex Heller of MVP Healthcare met with students in the innovative regional high school during a business partner presentation facilitated by the Capital Region Chamber.

During the virtual presentation, Heller and Bishop spoke about career trajectories, training and how to build a career path. They also focused heavily on using networking to advance themselves and build a foundation for a solid career.

“Network, network, network,” Bishop told the students, who hail from the Mohonasen, Guilderland, Cobleskill-Richmondville, Schalmont, Niskayuna school districts and beyond.

“If you can make a positive impression just one person you never know much of a change that can have for you. If the one person you met and impressed may be able to change the whole trajectory of your life,” he added.

Heller concurred.

“The people that have had conversation skills or knew someone I talked with, are the people I always wanted to get out and talk with and learn more about,” said Heller.

The cutting-edge, four- to six-year P-TECH program (grades 9-12 and two years of college) prepares students for future careers in the field of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through hands-on, project based learning. Depending on their interests, students will study at one of two Capital Region sites beginning their freshman year and remain there for the duration of the program.

It also provides students with an opportunity to earn a FREE associates degree.

Offered to students throughout the region through a consortium that includes Capital Region BOCES, the Capital Region Chamber, Hudson Valley Community College and SUNY Schenectady County Community College, P-TECH offers a distinct pathway that leads to an associate’s degree from a neighboring college in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Cybersecurity.
