Capital Region BOCES Partners with STS Steel, Package One to Encourage Students to Manufacture New Careers

In recognition of National Manufacturing Day, 60 Capital Region BOCES students toured two major area manufacturers and learned about career opportunities in the burgeoning industry.

Students in the BOCES Welding and Metal Fabrication program joined their counterparts in the Manufacturing and Machining Technology program and the Engineering Technician program in touring Package One Industries and STS Steel Inc., both of which are located in Schenectady.

“It’s cool, this looks like something I want to do in the future,” said junior Demetreus Stoddard, a manufacturing student from Guilderland.

“I really like what I am seeing. I like this is as a career. Everything is very precise and I am a precise kind of guy,” added classmate Cardell Iarusso, of Berne-Knox-Westerlo (BKW).

While at Package One, the students not only toured all of the various equipment, but also met with 2019 Manufacturing and Machining Technology graduate Chris Zautner, who now works in the operation’s machine shop.

“I love it. It’s a great job. It’s a great environment. I have lot of different jobs and a variety of things to do,” the Voorheesville High School graduate said.

Held annually on the first Friday in October, Manufacturing Day is designed to show the reality of modern manufacturing careers with thousands of companies and educational institutions around the nation opening their doors to students, parents, teachers and community leaders. With 2.4 million skilled manufacturing jobs projected to go unfilled in the U.S. in the next decade, it’s more imperative than ever that students consider careers in the industry.

Capital Region BOCES participates in the event annually with tours and other educational offerings.

“This is great, I like it. I can see myself doing this for a job,” Manufacturing student Jeremy Rivera of Schenectady said.
