August 1, 2019SUNY SCCC Grads Welcome P-TECH Students to College Life
They may only be freshmen in high school, but two-dozen students in the innovative Capital Region BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) got a head start on their college education on Tuesday as they heard tips on how to survive college life from SUNY Schenectady County Community College graduates.
While the presentation at the SUNY SCCC campus from 2018 graduate Elizabeth Rivera and 2017 graduate Jahira Bethea may seem premature for a high school freshman, it wasn’t for the P-TECH students who will be undertaking college-level classes as part of their work in the high school.
“It’s very interesting all of the knowledge and experience coming at you at once. I like it. It’s great,” said Jesse Butler, a P-TECH freshman from Schalmont.
The students from Mohonasen, Schalmont, Cobleskill-Richmondville, Scotia-Glenville, Guilderland, Niskayuna, Shenendehowa, Middleburgh and Berne-Knox-Westerlo school districts visited SUNY SCCC on the second day of a week-long introduction to P-TECH.
Launched in 2018, P-TECH is a four- to six-year program (grades 9-14) offered to students throughout the region through a consortium that includes Capital Region BOCES, the Capital Region Chamber, Hudson Valley Community College and SUNY Schenectady County Community College.
The program’s two campuses – East Campus is at Watervliet High School, West Campus at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen – provides pathways for students to earn free college degrees in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems and Cybersecurity.
