May 15, 20192020 Census Forum Set for May 20 at Albany Public Library
Multiple community, government, and civic organizations are gearing up for the pivotal roles they’ll play in the 2020 census, one of which is to inform individuals about why, how, and where to fill out their census forms. To that end, the League of Women Voters of Albany County and Albany Public Library are hosting “Shape Your Future: The 2020 Census and You” on Monday, May 20, at 6-8:30 pm at the library’s Washington Ave. Branch.
“In less than one year, on April 1, 2020, the census will be in full swing. This process of counting will ensure that the political power, health, and safety of every community is maintained or enhanced in the upcoming decade. The voices of residents of Albany County need to be heard, and this forum will be an opportunity,” said Patricia Sibilia, president of the League of Women Voters of Albany County.
During the May 20 forum, people will learn about the 2020 census operation to ensure a complete and accurate count in all communities. A panel of experts from the US Census Bureau, One Person One Vote Coalition, Council on Children and Families, Albany County, City of Albany, and Albany Public Library will share information about how their organizations are involved in the 2020 census efforts. The panelists will discuss census facts, areas of concern, and how people can take action. The group will also field questions from the audience.
“Public libraries are one of the primary community resources for connecting people to the internet. With the changes being made to the 2020 census, libraries know that we will see an increase in people visiting us to use public computers and WiFi and for one-on-one assistance in completing the census questionnaire,” said Scott C. Jarzombek, executive director of Albany Public Library. “Albany Public Library is working with multiple community partners to make sure we are up to the task of ensuring that Albany Counts.”
The census forum is free and open to the public.
