June 4 – Piece of History Comes Home to Capital Roots

WHEN: Thursday, June 4, 2015 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Urban Grow Center, 594 River Street, Troy.

DESCRIPTION: Capital Roots (formerly Capital District Community Gardens) was founded in 1975 as a community service project of Garden Way, the former manufacturer of Troy-Bilt Rototillers. Dean Leith, then president and CEO of Garden Way, established the organization to provide gardening space and assistance to neighbors in the region who wished to grow vegetable gardens but lacked sufficient space to do so. Throughout the years under Leith’s direction and then under the direction of current Executive Director Amy Klein, Capital Roots grew into an organization that not only provides Capital Region families space to grow their own food, but access to fresh, healthy produce at affordable prices through a variety of other programs.

On June 4, Capital Roots will unveil the addition of an original Troy-Bilt rototiller from the 1980s—crested with Leith’s signature on the tiller hood—that will be displayed in the atrium of the Urban Grow Center. On loan from the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway, an organization dedicated to celebrating and preserving the historic industrial legacy of the Capital District, the piece will serve as a tribute to Leith and the organization’s founding.

Capital Roots Executive Director Amy Klein and Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway Executive Director Michael Barrett will be in attendance for photographs and interviews.
