April 4, 2019Capital Region BOCES Students Learn at Operating Engineers Local 158
The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 158 in Glenmont hosted nearly two-dozen Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School students on Wednesday, providing them with an opportunity to check out the various careers they could pursue through the union. Students from Schoharie, BKW, Middleburgh, Voorheesville, Sharon Springs, Ravena, Duanesburg, Schalmont and Cobleskill-Richmondville school enrolled in the Heavy Equipment/Construction program took part in the unions first annual Technology Day, which it hosted in collaboration with Milton CAT and SITECH Northeast.
Students tried their hands on various simulators, including the latest 2D and Trimble GPS “Earthworks” 3D excavators under the watchful eye of union members and Bill Gray, a Capital Region BOCES graduate and current training director of the union. CAT’s next generation of excavators were on display and the New York State Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Services. demonstrated how the union and the rescue team work together.
Students in the two-year Heavy Equipment and Construction program learn the knowledge and skills to enter construction industry or pursue further education in college or technical school. They learn everything from equipment operator and maintenance skills to how to construct a building. The students can earn National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certifications, which are recognized nationwide by contractors and employers.
