November 26, 2018Capital Region BOCES to Host Open House for Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) Program
Do you know an 8th grader in the Capital Region who is interested in getting on the fast track to a no-cost college degree in a high tech field? Come learn about the new Capital Region BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) program.
Capital Region Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) is a four- to six-year program (grades 9-14) focused on engaging students in hands-on, project-based learning to be successful in careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students who successfully complete the program earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree at no cost in a high-tech field. Graduates are first in line for a job with industry partners in the growing field of information technology.
Approximately three dozen P-TECH students learn on the Mohonasen and Watervliet campuses with business partners arranged through the Capital Region Chamber serving as their mentors.
First-year students say the combination of technological research, interaction with business leaders and hands-on learning makes P-TECH a top choice for students.
“I enjoy focusing on scientific breakthrough and technology while in high school,” said freshman Jacob Lautup of the Schalmont Central School District.
Classmate Trevor Cowan of Cobleskill agreed.
“I chose P-TECH because I am more interested in computer technology and research and it’s more hands-on than a traditional class,” he said.
