October 17, 2018Capital Region BOCES Graduate Cooks up International Success
Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School graduate Carly Yezzo found culinary success in Chile — the country, not the food.
Yezzo, a 2016 Scotia-Glenville graduate, was part of a three-person team from SUNY Delhi that won a gold medal at Copa Culinaria 2018, an international culinary competition held in Santiago, Chile, from September 25 to 27.
During the competition, each team was required to use salmon in the entree and quinoa in the dessert. Delhi’s team crafted their dishes with an American flair, using multiple techniques in constructing the entree and featuring peanut butter and jelly in the dessert. Yezzo was responsible for the entree and her teammates were in charge of the dessert.
“We were proud to represent SUNY Delhi and the USA so well. … We worked well together as a team and are thrilled to bring home this victory,” Yezzo told a SUNY Delhi publication.
During a visit to Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School last year, Yezzo credited BOCES with giving her a solid culinary foundation to carve her future out of.
“Basically, I learned all of my knife skills and techniques at Capital Region BOCES,” Yezzo said. “That kind of training prepared me well for college and competing at this level.”
The Capital Region BOCES culinary program serves 82 students from across the Capital Region and beyond, preparing them to enter the workforce or pursue additional training in college. Graduates work in restaurants and resorts around the region and beyond, own their establishment and even prepare food for professional sporting events.
