Embrace Leadership at Your Library: Celebrate National Library Week April 8-14 at SCPL

This week, the Schenectady County Public Library joins libraries nationwide in celebrating the many ways libraries lead their communities through the transformative services, events and expertise they offer.

April 8-14 is the 60th National Library Week, an annual celebration of the life-changing work of libraries, librarians and library workers. Library Director, Karen Bradley states that “Libraries aren’t just places to borrow books or study—they’re also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate using new technologies and develop their skills and passions. Resources like e-books and technology classes and materials for English-language learners are just a few ways our libraries and librarians are transforming to lead our community. Our Schenectady County Public Library System continuously strives to meet the needs of our diverse community.   The construction of the Phyllis Bornt Branch library has transformed one of the neediest areas of the city of Schenectady and a spring groundbreaking of the new Mont Pleasant Branch library is anticipated to have the same impact.”

“The Library helps lead the community by offering free streaming movies, music and eBooks through our new Hoopla app, early literacy story times, financial workshops, computer classes, parenting groups, access to free Wi-Fi and so much more. The library helps lead our community by advocating for widespread access to crucial services and lifelong learning,” said Leah LaFera, Adult Services librarian and National Library Week Chairperson, “Libraries level the playing field for people of any age who seek information and access to technologies to improve their quality of life. All SCPL locations are celebrating National Library Week by offering numerous free classes and events including a trivia night, book discussions, family science workshops, writing classes, the annual Friends Poetry Gals and our first Repair Café. Stop-by your local library to find out how you can win an iPad Mini sponsored by Reference USA.”
