October 25, 2017Sponsor-A-Scholar Seeks Volunteer Mentors, Thanks Partners
Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, a college access and success program, is seeking adult volunteers for its mentoring program. The program, which works in Albany, Schenectady and Troy’s public high schools, matches college-educated adults with promising 10th graders. Mentors work individually with students throughout high school and into the student’s first year of college. The program needs 20 mentors by December.
Mentors are carefully screened and trained by Sponsor-A-Scholar staff. The program also offers ongoing guidance and support for all volunteer mentors. Sponsor-A-Scholar has developed partnerships with area businesses, including Bank of America, CDPHP, Merit, M&T Bank, MVP Health Care and SEFCU to aid in mentor recruitment.
Robin Christenson, executive director of Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, highlighted the importance of community support and the value of mentors to the overall effectiveness of the program: “We are grateful for our strong ties to so many local partners who believe in our program and our students and who help us find the caring adult mentors who can truly make a transformational difference in our Scholars’ lives.”
To be considered, mentors must have a college degree, a willingness to submit to a criminal background check, and an interest in working with high school-aged students.
