Better Neighborhoods Receives Grant to Improve the Health and Safety of Low-Income Renters in Schenectady

Better Neighborhoods, Inc., a nonprofit housing organization founded in 1966 to create and preserve affordable housing for residents of the City of Schenectady, was recently awarded $12,500 from the B’Nai B’rith Gideon Foundation of the Community Foundation of the Greater Capital Region to improve the health and safety of low-income renters in properties owned by Better Neighborhoods.

This funding will be used to address two critical housing needs: accessibility and bed bugs. Better Neighborhoods will now be able to provide accessibility modifications for clients who are living with a disability, including seniors, so they can safely remain in their current housing. In addition, Better Neighborhoods will be able to launch a mini-educational campaign designed to raise awareness about bed bugs and how to prevent, detect, and treat infestations.

Executive Director for Better Neighborhoods James Flacke said, “We are extremely grateful for this grant from the B’Nai B’rith Gideon Foundation. With their support, we will improve the health and safety of some of the most vulnerable residents in our community.”
